Thailand is positioning itself to become ASEAN’s first spaceport, aiming to play a pivotal role in the burgeoning space industry. Thanapant Raicharoen, a commissioner at the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC), has highlighted the opportunity for the country to establish itself as a key player in space exploration and satellite development.
According to Thanapant, Thailand’s strategic southern region offers an ideal location for a rocket launch pad due to its proximity to the equator. This geographical advantage could allow rockets to utilize Earth’s rotation, making it easier to launch heavier payloads with less fuel. Favorable weather conditions, such as clear skies and stable temperatures, along with minimal risk from natural disasters, further solidify the region’s potential for spaceport development.
In addition to satellite launches, Thanapant envisions Thailand playing a broader role in space, including the potential for sending astronauts and building data centers in orbit. He suggests that collaboration with international partners, particularly China, could drive investment and access to cutting-edge technology. He likened this potential partnership to Thailand’s success in drawing Japanese investors to bolster the automotive industry, which has since flourished.
While the NBTC itself does not oversee spaceport construction, Thanapant emphasized that the commission is instrumental in granting permission for the use of satellite orbits, a critical component in space operations.
With growing interest from private firms and the rising demand for smaller low-Earth orbit satellites, it was reported that Thailand may be ready to take its place in the global space race. Authorities are optimistic that the country’s unique geographic and economic advantages could propel it to the forefront of the space industry in Southeast Asia.
