LOPBURI — An 18-year-old man was fatally attacked by two American Bully dogs at his home in Lopburi Province on the night of September 1, 2024. This incident marks the second fatal attack involving this breed in Thailand within the past month. The victim was identified as the younger brother of Apisit, a 23-year-old police officer who had left the dogs in his family’s care while working a night shift in Bangkok.
CCTV footage from the night of the attack shows the victim attempting to flee to a bedroom but failing to secure the door before the dogs reached him. His father later found him with severe injuries, including the loss of both ears. The two dogs, which had previously been described as gentle by their owner, were promptly secured following the attack.
Apisit, who is deeply grieving his brother’s death, has faced a significant backlash on social media, with many blaming him for the tragic event. He has pleaded for empathy, highlighting the intense sorrow his family is experiencing. His mother, overwhelmed by the tragedy, fainted during the funeral proceedings held at Wat Luang Thai Talat in Mueang Lopburi District on September 1. The cremation is set for September 5.
According to Apisit, the dogs, named Fino and Tesla, may have been stressed due to his unusual absence, which could have contributed to their aggression. He speculates that this stress, combined with possible rough play by his brother, might have triggered the fatal attack. The two dogs were reportedly uncontrollable once they began their assault, driven by the scent of blood. A third dog, their mother, was also injured, likely in an attempt to intervene.
The tragic incident has compelled Apisit to find new homes for the dogs, seeking individuals experienced in handling American Bullies. He has requested that the media refrain from further coverage of the story, citing the severe emotional impact on his family.
This attack follows another fatal incident involving American Bullies in Khon Kaen Province on July 24, 2024, where three dogs killed a 70-year-old man. In both cases, the involved dogs were rehomed after the attacks.
The American Bully breed, developed in the United States during the 1980s and 1990s, is known for its muscular build and potential for aggression if not properly trained and cared for. Although often regarded as a family dog, the breed has faced restrictions and bans in several countries, including the United Kingdom, Ireland, Turkey, and the United Arab Emirates, due to safety concerns, as noted by Caroline Coile, author of the Encyclopedia of Dog Breeds.
