Fearing for her safety, the student embarked on a journey across different parts of Thailand, including Bangkok’s Ladkrabang area, Ekkamai, and Sri Racha district in Chonburi.

Throughout her ordeal, the scammer syndicate employed elaborate tactics, assuming different identities to intimidate and manipulate the victim. Under duress, the student was coerced into signing an acknowledgment of debt and was compelled to maintain constant communication with her captors. The scam, initiated in February during her studies in Australia, targeted the student’s vulnerability and financial resources.

Thai authorities, led by Pol. Col. Atchariya Ruangrattanapong of the Crime Victim Assistance Association, intervened to rescue the student from further harm. However, such scams, which often prey on affluent families and exploit digital platforms for illicit gains, pose significant challenges for law enforcement. Pol. Lt. Gen. Thanathat Kangruambutr explained that while such cases are more prevalent abroad, they nonetheless underscore the need for enhanced vigilance and international cooperation to combat cybercrime.
