Consumers Council Plans Lawsuits Over Rama 2 Road Accidents

The TCC has announced its intention to file both civil and administrative lawsuits in response to ongoing construction-related accidents on Rama 2 Road. According to TCC Secretary-General Saree Aongsomwang, over 2,500 accidents have been recorded since last year, leading to 144 deaths and more than 1,400 people being left disabled.

Compensation demands include an estimated 7.7 million baht for families of deceased victims and a long-term support plan providing 10,000 baht per month for 20 years for those who have been disabled. The lawsuits are expected to target a wide range of parties, from subcontractors and contractors to the transport minister.

LCT President Wichian Chubthaisong stated that a working group will be formed to collect evidence in preparation for legal proceedings in both Civil and Administrative courts. He anticipates that the first lawsuit will be submitted within the next month.

Meanwhile, Sumet Ongkittikul, Vice President of the Thailand Development and Research Institute, has called for a thorough investigation into the recurring accidents. He emphasized the need to determine whether the incidents result from structural flaws, contractor qualifications, construction procedures, supervision standards, or a combination of these factors.

The lawsuits and investigations mark a significant push for accountability in one of Thailand’s most accident-prone infrastructure projects.
