Controversy Erupts Over Dating App Billboard in Korat

A recent addition to the skyline of Muang district in Nakhon Ratchasima, locally known as Korat, has ignited a wave of discussion among Thai netizens. The source of contention? A towering billboard promoting a dating app, which has stirred up mixed reactions within the community.

Featuring prominently on the billboard was a provocative question: ‘What is delicious in Korat?’ Beneath this query were two options: ‘Fried Korat Noodles’ or ‘Korat ladies’. Notably, a checkmark appeared next to ‘Korat Ladies’, while a cross was marked beside ‘Fried Korat Noodles’.

The revelation of this billboard came to light following its appearance on the Korat Daily Facebook page. Subsequently, reactions began to pour in, with some individuals expressing discontentment, asserting that the advertisement perpetuates stereotypes and demeans Korat women.

However, amidst the criticism, a significant portion of the discussion on the Korat Daily Facebook page revealed an unexpected twist. Despite the controversial nature of the advertisement, many users expressed curiosity about the dating app and even contemplated utilizing it to seek romantic connections. In response to detractors, some users urged a more lighthearted perspective, emphasizing that the billboard is merely an advertisement for Tinder, a popular dating platform.

Yet, as discussions continued to unfold online, calls emerged for the removal of the contentious billboard. Questions were raised regarding the authority responsible for granting permission for its installation, adding another layer of complexity to the ongoing discourse.

As reactions continue to simmer, it remains to be seen how local authorities and community members will address this contentious issue.
