Final basement search nears end at SAO collapse site

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) confirmed that excavation work in Zone SC2 has been completed, and efforts are now concentrated on Zone SC1, the last uncleared section of the site. According to BMA’s Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Office Director Suriyachai Rawiwan, heavy machinery is being used cautiously due to the risk of ground instability, particularly in zones B2 and B3 adjacent to the parking structure.

Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt stated that while the BMA is overseeing recovery operations, any decision about demolishing the structure will be made by the SAO. He noted that the earthquake had a limited structural impact citywide, with the SAO building being the only one to collapse. Other damaged buildings have undergone repairs and are deemed safe.

Authorities estimate that the final clearing process will take an additional three to four days, after which the site will be returned to the SAO for further action. The number of confirmed fatalities remains at 87, with 9 injured and 14 still unaccounted for, following six new missing persons reports received by police.

More than 200 sets of human remains or body parts have been recovered and are undergoing identification by forensic teams at the Institute of Forensic Medicine, Police General Hospital. Officials believe some of the newly reported missing may already be among the unidentified remains. So far, the families of 45 to 46 victims have received the remains of their loved ones.

Surrounding areas are gradually reopening, and the Chatuchak District Office is continuing to assess residual public impact to determine whether further assistance or compensation is required. Reports were initially published by NBT World and local authorities.
