Hong Kong Tour Guide Arrested for Illegal Phuket Tours

In a recent development in Phuket, Thailand, authorities have apprehended a Hong Kong national, Mr. Wong Tsz Kin, aged 31, for his involvement in conducting unauthorized tours for tourists visiting Khao Nakkerd Buddhist Park, commonly referred to as Wat Phra Yai, located in Karon Subdistrict. The crackdown came in response to reports of illicit tour operations targeting Hong Kong and Chinese visitors to the temple.

During a routine inspection on Tuesday, tourism police officials encountered Wong leading a group of Hong Kong tourists around the temple grounds, offering historical insights and showcasing the surrounding attractions. However, upon request for his tour guide license, Wong failed to provide one, leading to his apprehension and subsequent interrogation at the Tourist Police Office in Mueang Phuket District.

Investigations revealed that Wong had been advertising and selling tour packages to Chinese travelers via online platforms. Upon their arrival, he would then personally guide them on tours across the island, without the necessary licenses or permits. As a result, Wong faces charges related to operating an unlicensed tour company, working as a tour guide without proper authorization, and violating regulations pertaining to foreign employment.

Following his apprehension, Wong was escorted to the Karon police station to undergo further legal procedures. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued advisories to foreign nationals, emphasizing that the profession of tour guiding is restricted by Thai law, with only Thai citizens permitted to engage in such activities within the Kingdom.
