Hua Hin Shooting Suspect Granted Bail Amid Public Outcry

On August 21, 2024, it was reported that the investigation into the fatal shooting of Sgt. Punch Rojanaphon, 31, by Mr. Chakkrikit, 34, a former advisor to the Hua Hin Police Affairs Committee, has garnered significant attention. The incident occurred in a nightclub located in Hua Hin 80 Alley, where Sgt. Punch, who was formerly part of a special operations unit and worked in intelligence, was killed. The shooter allegedly used a 9mm firearm to commit the crime, which also left three other people injured.

The shooting has drawn widespread criticism, particularly because it raised questions about how a firearm was brought into the establishment. Further investigation revealed that the nightclub had been operating without a license and staying open until 5 a.m., in violation of regulations.

On August 19, the Hua Hin Provincial Court granted temporary bail for Mr. Chakkrikit, with a bond set at 500,000 baht. The release sparked an outcry online, especially from Sgt. Punch’s widow, who pleaded for justice. Despite her opposition to the bail, Mr. Chakkrikit was represented by a legal team of four, ultimately securing his release.

Kan Jompalang, a well-known social advocate, stepped forward to offer support to Sgt. Punch’s family, coordinating with the Royal Thai Army to ensure legal and safety assistance for them. He stated that he would make sure the case is pursued thoroughly and that no one is left without justice. Kan also plans to visit Hua Hin on August 22 to follow up on the case.

In a separate development, Pol. Maj. Gen. Jamlong Ngamnet, commander of the Prachuap Khiri Khan Provincial Police, held a meeting with investigators, including Pol. Col. Kittipob Chomphunuch and Pol. Lt. Col. Worathon Krungkajana, to review the case. The urgency of the investigation was stressed, following orders from the Region 7 Provincial Police Commander to expedite proceedings due to public interest in the case.

After the meeting, Maj. Gen. Jamlong declined to answer further questions, citing confidentiality. He added that an inquiry into the nightclub’s illegal operations would be conducted, with legal actions to follow based on the findings.
