Investigation Launched into Koh Tao Boat Fire

The Marine Department has initiated a swift investigation into a morning blaze aboard a passenger boat near Koh Tao Island, off Surat Thani province’s coast.

According to Director General Kritphet Chaihuay, the fire ignited in the engine room, with authorities currently probing its origin.

Departing Surat Thani around 9:30 PM the previous night, the boat carried 90 passengers and eight crew members, bound for Tao Island. Emergency services were notified of the incident at approximately 6:40 AM.

Passengers and crew members promptly evacuated into the sea, with rescue teams and nearby tour boats swiftly joining the rescue efforts.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported, and the fire was quelled by approximately 8:20 AM.

With Songkran holidays approaching, Kritphet has mandated enhanced safety protocols to prevent future incidents.
