Koh Samui’s Growing Cruise Tourism Boosts Local Economy

Recently, Dr. Kampanat Klinsaowakon, Koh Samui District Chief, disclosed the burgeoning cruise tourism market’s impact on the island. Over the November 2023 to March 2024 period, Koh Samui witnessed a surge in cruise ship visits, solidifying its status as a premier destination for global tourists. With both small and large vessels docking at the port, visitors embarked on captivating One Day Trip tours, exploring the island’s myriad attractions. Notably, 34 cruise ships graced the port in the first half of the year, injecting vitality into the local tourism sector and bolstering the nation’s economy.

Dr. Kampanat Klinsaowakon noted that the Mein Schiff 5 marked the final cruise ship to visit Koh Samui before the season’s end on May 3. Carrying predominantly European passengers, the vessel accommodated 2,476 tourists, who partook in island excursions. Among them, 1,570 followed prearranged tour programs, while 898 opted for independent exploration. Assisting in ensuring order and facilitating tourist activities at Saphan Klang Pier were Mr. Suriya Madi, Permanent Secretary of the Security Department of Koh Samui District, and a dedicated team from the Tourism Department. Collaborating seamlessly with various agencies, including Koh Samui Municipality, law enforcement, transportation authorities, and immigration and customs officials, a joint operations center was established to streamline tourist services and uphold safety standards.

This concerted effort aims to enhance the overall tourist experience, fostering a sense of security and satisfaction among visitors. The proactive approach of the district’s integrated unit underscores its commitment to ensuring a seamless and memorable stay for cruise ship tourists.
