Magnitude 4.5 Earthquake Strikes Phitsanulok Province, Prompting Urgent Surveillance

Phitsanulok Province, Thailand – In a seismic event that startled residents and neighboring provinces, an earthquake of magnitude 4.5 struck Phitsanulok province on June 29, 2023. The Earthquake Surveillance Division of the Meteorological Department swiftly reported the occurrence, revealing that the tremors were felt across a wide area.

The epicenter of the earthquake was identified at coordinates 16.56° N and 100.37° E, specifically in the Phai Lom Subdistrict of Bang Krathum District. The quake, which had a depth of 5 km, jolted the region at precisely 00:17 local time. Reports indicate that the impact was felt not only in Phitsanulok Province but also in the neighboring provinces of Phichit and Kamphaeng Phet.

The Sanphet Phichit Rescue Association, through its official page, also shared an announcement acknowledging the effects of the earthquake. Numerous sub-districts in Phichit District experienced tremors, further confirming the widespread impact of the seismic event. The proximity of Mueang Phichit District to Bang Krathum District in Phitsanulok Province further supports the reports of tremors felt in Phichit.

Following the incident, concerns have been raised about the preparedness and management of emergency alerts. Some individuals have expressed the need for a more efficient and organized system that resembles international standards. While rare, such incidents highlight the importance of ensuring the public’s ability to respond promptly and effectively in times of emergency.
