In the early hours of March 21, 2024, an earthquake with a magnitude of 2.3 rattled Tha Sason Subdistrict, Phunphin District, Surat Thani Province, Thailand. Mr. Bunchum Chumbuachan, Director of the Surat Thani Meteorological Station, confirmed the seismic event, emphasizing its occurrence at 6:48 a.m. local time [TMD]. Despite its tremors, measuring 9.021 latitude and 99.266 longitude, the earthquake did not result in any significant violence or impact on the surrounding area.


Concerns naturally arise regarding the potential impact on infrastructure, particularly house constructions. However, Mr. Chumbuachan reassured that, for now, there should be no immediate effects on buildings. He advised reinforcing structures with driven piles and beams to mitigate potential impact forces. Moreover, there have been no reported aftershocks, alleviating further concerns among residents.
Following the event, officials mobilized to address community concerns and provide support. Mr. Jesada Jitrat, Governor of Surat Thani Province, promptly dispatched Mr. Wisoot Intharakamnerd, Phunphin District Chief, alongside Mr. Watcharin Kongsap, Head of Planning and Administration Department at Surat Thani Provincial Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Office, and other relevant officials. Their mission included offering guidance, imparting knowledge, and fostering understanding among the residents of Tha Sason Subdistrict. This collaborative effort aims to instill confidence and equip locals with the necessary tools to navigate such situations effectively.
