Multiple Injuries and Derailment as Two Freight Trains Collide in Ratchaburi Province

In a shocking incident at Sra Kosinarai Railway Station in Ban Pong District, Ratchaburi Province, two freight trains collided, resulting in the derailment of eight carriages and leaving eight individuals injured. The accident is believed to have occurred due to a suspected track switching mistake.

At 6:00 a.m. on June 20, 2023, authorities, including Pol. Col. Piyapong Wongketjai, Superintendent of Ban Pong Police Station, and Pol. Lt. Krittaphas Montri, Lieutenant Colonel of Ban Pong Police Station, along with officials from the Ratchaburi Charity Foundation, arrived at the scene to initiate investigations. The collision had caused numerous injuries near Sa Kosinarai Railway Station, located in Village No. 19, Tha Pha Subdistrict, Ban Pong District.

The collision took place on the second track, a double track designed to ensure the safe passage of trains. Two individuals, identified as Mr. Suthep Sam Phi Nong, the train driver, and Mr. Bowonwit Wichitkul, the assistant train driver, were injured and had to be extricated from the wreckage using cutting equipment before being transported to Ban Pong Hospital. Additionally, eight cargo containers were derailed and sustained damage.

Preliminary findings suggest that freight train No. 725, bearing the side number 4222 and powered by the Burachat 2 locomotive, had collected goods from Laem Chabang Port in Chonburi Province and was en route to Tha Sala in Tha Muang District, Kanchanaburi Province. Meanwhile, another train carrying unloaded paper was waiting to be returned to Lat Krabang. Efforts are underway to clear the route and restore normal operations, as only two carriages are currently obstructing Tram 1.

Authorities are actively coordinating with relevant units to investigate the accident and ensure the safety of the railway system.
