NACC Probes Alleged Corruption in Khon Kaen Schools

In a concerning development, the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) has launched a probe into allegations of “tea money” demands at eight secondary schools in Khon Kaen province, Thailand. The investigation stems from reports of these schools allegedly requesting payments of up to 100,000 baht from parents of students who failed entrance examinations.

Thirat Bangpetch, the acting director of NACC’s Khon Kaen office, revealed that numerous complaints had been lodged by concerned parents regarding corrupt practices within these educational institutions. Following an independent investigation conducted by the NACC, substantial evidence has emerged indicating the solicitation of bribes from parents whose children faced admission hurdles.

The gravity of the situation was underscored by the presentation of an audio clip to Thai PBS reporters on March 27th, wherein two parents engaged in a conversation detailing the demands made by school authorities. The dialogue outlined instances where payments of 100,000 baht were stipulated, with ultimatums for payment deadlines and threats of increased amounts if not met.

Amidst these troubling revelations, Thirat emphasized the necessity for schools to provide transparent information regarding the number of vacant seats, applicants, and exam results. This transparency is essential, as many parents remain uninformed about available vacancies or their children’s performance in the entrance examinations.

Efforts to uncover the truth have been met with resistance, with some school administrators refusing to comply with requests for documentation related to the examinations.
