Nakhon Ratchasima Eyes Air Force Base for Flights

Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand – In a bid to invigorate its tourism and business sectors, Nakhon Ratchasima province is eyeing the reactivation of Wing 1 of the Royal Thai Air Force for commercial flight operations. This proposition was put forth by provincial state agency representatives during a recent meeting with Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin on Sunday, March 24.

The initiative aims to make travel to the province more convenient and bolster local business endeavors. Nakhon Ratchasima has previously relied on its Department of Airports-operated airport until commercial flights ceased in 1997. However, with interest expressed by Nok Air in reinstating operations, contingent upon the utilization of the centrally located Wing 1 facility, the proposal to reactivate the old airport has gained traction.

Prime Minister Thavisin has directed Transport Minister Suriya Jungrungreangkit to evaluate the feasibility of this proposal. Notably, Wing 1’s location within the capital district offers a more proximate access point to the city compared to the existing Nakhon Ratchasima airport. This strategic advantage could enhance convenience for travelers and stimulate economic activity in the region, supplementing the closest operational airport located in Buri Ram.

Officials and stakeholders anticipate that repurposing Wing 1 for commercial flights could significantly benefit Nakhon Ratchasima’s tourism industry and foster growth in local businesses.
