National Park Director Orders Severe Punishment for Tour Boat Operators

In a decisive move to combat environmental degradation, Mr. Atthaphon Charoenchansa, Director-General of the Department of National Parks, Wildlife, and Plant Conservation, has ordered severe penalties for tour boat operators found damaging coral reefs in Koh Kradan, Hat Chao Mai National Park. The directive comes after reports surfaced of tour boats tethering to coral reefs, causing extensive damage and sparking public outrage.

The incident, brought to light by MONSOONGARBAGE THAILAND’s social media posts, depicted tour boats recklessly anchoring near coral reefs, leading to widespread condemnation. Mr. Atthaphon received a detailed report from Mr. Sangsuree Songthong, head of Hat Chao Mai National Park, confirming the violation near the National Park Protection Unit, Section 3 (Koh Kradan).

Following the revelation, authorities have swiftly gathered evidence and prepared to take legal action against the operators involved. Hat Chao Mai National Park is set to convene with a group of boat operators to devise strategies aimed at preventing further harm to natural resources.

Under the National Park Act 2019, Mr. Atthaphon emphasized the authority’s readiness to impose stringent penalties, including banning ships from entering the affected areas to mitigate the risk of environmental destruction. Additionally, local committees and tourism operators will be briefed on measures to safeguard natural resources and the consequences of violating park regulations.

The Director-General’s stern stance underscores the government’s commitment to preserving Thailand’s pristine natural heritage. It serves as a stern warning to individuals and businesses engaging in activities detrimental to the country’s fragile ecosystems.
