Panipak Wins Historic Second Gold in Taekwondo at Paris Olympics

Panipak Wongpattanakit secured Thailand’s first Olympic gold medal of the Paris Games on Wednesday, successfully defending her title in the taekwondo women’s flyweight division. The 29-year-old athlete triumphed over China’s Guo Qing in a match that saw her win 6-3, 2-3, 6-2, with the final points clinched by two head kicks, each earning three points. This victory makes Panipak the first Thai athlete to win two Olympic gold medals in any sport, marking a historic moment for the nation.

Panipak, who announced her retirement following the Paris Games, concluded her illustrious career with this win. After the match, she celebrated by grabbing a Thai flag and embracing her coach. “I have so much pain,” Panipak remarked on the eve of her 27th birthday, citing a broken knee and other injuries. Despite the physical toll, she leaves the sport with a perfect record. “I have a gym in Thailand,” she added, inviting anyone interested to train with her.

In other Olympic news, Theerapong Silachai earned a silver medal in the Men’s 61 kg weightlifting event, while Surajana Khampao claimed a bronze medal in the Women’s 49 kg weightlifting category. These achievements contribute to Thailand’s strong showing at the Paris Olympics, bringing a sense of pride and inspiration to the country.

It was reported that several officials and supporters were present to witness Panipak’s historic win and to celebrate the success of the Thai athletes at the Games.
