Phuket Plans Major Port Expansion Amid Rising Maritime Traffic

In response to a notable surge in yacht and cruise liner activity, Phuket province is witnessing a significant uptick in maritime traffic, with 159 vessels traversing its waters in 2023 alone, marking a notable increase from previous years. The Transport Ministry has consequently initiated plans to fast-track the development of a substantial port through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) endeavor, aiming to meet the burgeoning demand.

Data compiled by the Transport Ministry reveals a fluctuating trajectory in yacht traffic over the last five years, reaching its pinnacle in 2019, dipping during the pandemic, and resurging robustly in 2023. Addressing this trend, Transport Minister Suriya Jungrungreangkit has directed the Marine Department to elevate Phuket as a premier maritime destination capable of accommodating vessels of various sizes from across the globe.

As part of the envisioned enhancements, proposals are underway to construct a dedicated cruise terminal, facilitating routes traversing the Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman Sea, thereby linking regional ports and enriching the maritime travel experience.

The feasibility of this ambitious undertaking is presently under scrutiny, with a particular emphasis on the development of a new pier in Koh Samui. The project, projected to require an investment of 12.86 billion baht, is slated for review by the PPP Committee by June.

Officials anticipate that these initiatives will not only bolster Phuket’s standing as a coveted maritime hub but also fortify its appeal to international travelers seeking premier nautical experiences.
