PM Orders Crackdown on Construction Safety Violations

Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has ordered strict legal action against contractors failing to comply with safety regulations following a fatal construction accident on Rama 2 Road. She has directed authorities to review laws, impose stricter penalties, and hold responsible parties accountable to prevent similar incidents in the future.

During an emergency meeting with Deputy Prime Minister and Transport Minister Suriya Jungrungreangkit and other officials, the Prime Minister instructed the Department of Special Investigation (DSI) to conduct a forensic inquiry into the accident. The Ministry of Transport has also been tasked with improving public safety measures at construction sites.

The government is considering blacklisting contractors with repeated violations. The Transport Ministry and the Comptroller General’s Department are reviewing potential penalties, including banning non-compliant companies from bidding on government projects for up to two years. Contractors will also be required to maintain detailed safety records, documenting worksite accidents, fatalities, and injuries.

Minister Suriya stated that construction firms have been summoned to reinforce compliance and increase project oversight. He warned that repeated safety breaches will result in severe consequences.

The Prime Minister has demanded a full report on corrective measures within a week, emphasizing the government’s commitment to enforcing accountability and strengthening safety regulations to protect workers and the public.
