Saab Proposes Gripen Jets for Thailand’s Air Force

Saab AB, the renowned Swedish aerospace company, unveiled its proposal to supply Gripen fighter jets to the Royal Thai Air Force (RTAF) in a move to align with Thailand’s offset policy and national capability development requirements. The announcement comes amidst the RTAF’s plans to procure new fighter jets under a substantial budget allocation in the forthcoming fiscal year, as outlined in the RTAF’s white paper. The proposal, set for Cabinet review in April, includes considerations for both Gripen E/F and the US’s F-16 Block 70 aircraft. An imminent decision by a selection committee is anticipated to determine the superior choice, with a focus on value for money. Saab’s Strategic Communications Director, Robert Hewson, emphasized the Gripen’s advanced weaponry and capabilities, highlighting its potential to enhance operational efficiency while minimizing lifecycle costs for the RTAF. The proposal also underscores broader benefits for Thailand, including technology transfer, job creation, export growth, and capability development. This announcement follows the RTAF’s previous procurement of Gripen fighters, further solidifying Saab’s position in the Thai defense market.
