The incident occurred around 2:30am in Muang district, Samut Sakhon, when a steel cable from the elevated roadwork above Rama II Road came loose and struck a pickup truck and a trailer truck travelling toward Bangkok. The cable reportedly detached during the lifting of a concrete slab using a sling rotor, which failed mid-operation.
According to police and workers at the site, the sling reel recoiled, sending the steel cable onto the road below. The pickup truck, registered in Bangkok, and the trailer truck, from Prachuap Khiri Khan, were both damaged in the incident near kilometre marker 27 in Tha Sai subdistrict.
Officials confirmed that the construction contractor will be held responsible for the damage. Police have launched an investigation into the matter.
This marks the latest in a series of construction-related mishaps along the expressway route. Just last week, falling concrete from an old flyover on the same road fatally injured a motorist after it crashed through his windshield. Concerns have mounted over safety conditions surrounding the long-delayed intercity expressway project, which has been linked to multiple accidents and fatalities.
