A Swedish man has filed a public complaint after losing nearly 360,000 baht in a fraudulent marriage arrangement with a Thai woman who was already married. The situation escalated when the woman’s husband, a soldier, allegedly threatened him at a police station. The man, identified as Ahmet, 42, is now seeking help through a media platform in Bangkok.
Ahmet’s ordeal began on June 17 of this year, when he met the Thai woman via a dating app. By July, she had convinced him to marry her, asking him to transfer 359,000 baht to cover wedding expenses for a ceremony scheduled in August at her family home in Wat Ko Sub-district, Si Samrong District, Sukhothai Province. Acting out of love, Ahmet complied and sent the funds.
Upon arriving in Sukhothai on August 25, Ahmet was taken to a temporary residence, which the woman claimed belonged to a relative. After two days of silence, he realized he had been deceived and sought assistance from local Thai officials. He recounted his story to a rescue worker responding to local floods, who then contacted the woman. The pair agreed to proceed with a wedding ceremony on August 29.
When the time came, the woman informed Ahmet that the village headman was unavailable. Instead, they performed a traditional wrist-tying ceremony on August 30, with the rescue worker as a witness. Shortly after, the woman requested the rescue worker delete any photographic evidence of the event. Complicating matters further, a man soon contacted the rescue worker, claiming to be the woman’s husband and threatening legal action. It was revealed that the woman was still married.
Upon learning this, Ahmet attempted to file a complaint for fraud at Si Samrong Police Station. However, his complaint was refused by the authorities. During his time at the station, the woman’s husband, a soldier from Tak Province, allegedly arrived and confronted Ahmet, using aggressive language and physically intimidating him. This led Ahmet to fear for his safety and seek further help from the Facebook page “Sai Mai Tong Rod” (Sai Mai Must Survive).
It was reported that Ekkaphop Luangprasert, an advisor to the Minister of Interior and founder of the Sai Mai Tong Rod page, confirmed that his team would assist Ahmet in filing a complaint again with the Si Samrong Police.
