Taxi Scuffle: Foreigner’s Assault on Phuket Driver Sparks Viral Video

In a dramatic turn of events in Phuket’s Thalang district, a video capturing a foreign man’s attack on a Thai taxi driver has gone viral across Thai social media platforms. The altercation reportedly erupted after the driver confronted the passenger for smoking inside the cab.

The incident, which unfolded this morning on April 3, was shared by the Facebook page Newshawk Phuket around 9:40 am. The footage depicts the foreign individual grabbing the taxi driver’s collar from behind as the driver attempts to flee the vehicle.

Reports from various Thai media outlets have identified the assailant as either a German or Austrian national. The taxi driver, seeking assistance from nearby locals and motorists, managed to find aid from one individual who intervened, prompting the foreign man to desist from his aggressive behavior and exit the vehicle.

In an interview with ThaiRath, the taxi driver recounted picking up the foreign passenger from Phuket International Airport, with the intended destination being a hotel in the Chalong sub-district. Tensions flared when the passenger lit up a cigarette inside the cab, disregarding the driver’s warning against smoking.

According to the driver’s testimony, the situation escalated when the passenger launched a sudden attack from behind, strangling him as the car slowed down at a red light on Thep Krasattri Road, leading to a collision with an SUV ahead.

Despite the collision, the assailant persisted in assaulting the driver until assistance arrived. Surprisingly, the individual who intervened turned out to be the owner of the SUV involved in the collision.

Thanongsak, the owner of the SUV, disclosed to the media that he separated the two parties and accompanied them to the Thalang Police Station. While he requested compensation from the taxi driver’s insurance company, he was unaware of the altercation between the driver and the passenger.

Superintendent Nikorn Choothong of the Thalang Police Station informed ThaiRath that no charges had been filed against the foreign tourist as of yet. However, police were awaiting an interpreter to facilitate questioning of both parties to fully understand the circumstances surrounding the incident.
