Thai Authorities Seize Over 5kg Cocaine at Suvarnabhumi Airport

In a significant victory against drug trafficking, Thai authorities thwarted an international operation at Suvarnabhumi Airport, seizing over 5 kilograms of cocaine destined for the country’s entertainment districts. The Office of the Narcotics Control Board (ONCB) and the Customs Department revealed the capture of three foreign nationals and the interception of the cocaine, cleverly concealed within clothes drying racks from the United States.

The meticulous work of the Customs Department’s Airport Interdiction Task Force (AITF) led to the discovery of the narcotics on March 6 at Suvarnabhumi Airport. This operation is part of a broader crackdown on drug trafficking in entertainment areas frequented by both Thai and international tourists. Operation Nana Udom, focused on Bangkok’s Nana area, uncovered the involvement of West African groups distributing drugs and engaged in criminal activities like prostitution. Prostitutes were reportedly incentivized to sell narcotics to their clients.

Following the airport seizure, ONCB officials intensified surveillance of West African networks, leading to the arrest of three men attempting to collect the cocaine parcels. Further investigations in their Bangkok accommodation uncovered additional drug packaging materials and digital scales. Investigators believe this network has been smuggling drugs into Thailand since 2020, with previous cases resulting in the arrest of eight individuals and the seizure of significant quantities of cocaine and ecstasy pills.

The majority of drug seizures in recent years have been linked to West African networks, with cocaine primarily originating from South America. In 2022 and 2023, authorities handled numerous cases involving various illicit substances, underscoring the persistent threat posed by international drug trafficking networks.

The ONCB reaffirms its commitment to combatting drug trafficking and emphasizes the importance of continued vigilance against these sophisticated networks. The successful operation highlights the effective collaboration between Thai law enforcement agencies in safeguarding communities from the scourge of illicit drugs.
