Thai Consumers Urge Summer Power Tariff Reduction

The Consumers Council (TCC) urges the Thai government to reduce power tariffs during peak summer months to ease household electricity expenses. Advocates push for concrete measures amidst concerns over existing proposals’ efficacy.

Critics challenge the proposed adjustments by the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC), citing potential limitations in reducing electricity bills. The focus remains on alleviating the financial burdens of the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) rather than directly benefiting consumers.

TCC proposes a reduction in power tariffs, aiming to slash costs for consumers during May to August. Chairwoman Boonyuen Siritham emphasizes the importance of bolstering natural gas production and exploring LNG imports to mitigate fuel tariff components. Additionally, TCC suggests renegotiating gas production quotas with Malaysia for efficient resource utilization.

Furthermore, TCC highlights the necessity of incentivizing solar panel installations in residential areas to promote sustainable energy practices and further alleviate household electricity expenses.

The call for action comes amidst escalating concerns over rising electricity costs and the need for sustainable energy solutions. As stakeholders deliberate, the focus remains on balancing consumer welfare with energy sector sustainability.
