Thai Government Launches Vape Operation, Seizes Illegal E-Cigarettes

In a concerted effort to tackle the illicit trade of e-cigarettes, the Thai government initiated a bold “Vape Operation” in Bangkok, seizing over 10,000 illegal e-cigarette products valued at 3 million baht. Spearheaded by Dr. Puangpetch Chunlaid, the Minister attached to the Prime Minister’s Office, the operation targeted major hubs of e-cigarette sales across the city.

The operation, launched on March 6th, 2024, saw Dr. Puangpetch and relevant agencies conducting thorough inspections in various community areas of Bangkok, following a comprehensive police investigation. These areas were identified as hotspots for the unauthorized sale of e-cigarettes, particularly to minors and students.

Law enforcement officers swiftly confiscated disputed properties and proceeded to investigate warehouses in the Daeng area, suspected to be distribution centers for the illegal e-cigarette trade. Additionally, online platforms facilitating the sale and delivery of these products were also targeted and shut down by the police.

The collaborative “Vape Operation” involved multiple sectors working in unison to combat the proliferation of e-cigarettes in Thai society. A total of 15 locations were raided, leading to the apprehension of eight suspects involved in the illegal sale of e-cigarettes in Bangkok.

Dr. Puangpetch emphasized the government’s commitment to curbing the unlawful distribution of e-cigarettes, particularly due to their accessibility to minors and students. Many of these products were found near educational institutions, featuring attractive packaging designed to entice younger consumers.

Warning of the detrimental effects of e-cigarettes on both physical health and brain development, Dr. Puangpetch urged parents and guardians to closely monitor their children’s activities and discourage them from using such products.

To facilitate reporting of illegal e-cigarette sales, Dr. Puangpetch provided contact information for relevant authorities, including the hotline number 1166 and the Traffy Fondue application
