Thai Government Responds to Airport Ranking Controversy

On March 5th, 2024, Mr. Chai Watcharong, Thai Government spokesman, addressed concerns raised by Business Financing, a UK publisher, regarding Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang Airports’ ranking as the worst airports in Asia in 2023.

As reported by Thai national media, Business Financing released a public ranking of international airports in Asia, with Noi Bai International Airport in Vietnam topping the list, surpassing Changi Airport in Singapore and Hong Kong International Airport.

In contrast, Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang Airports found themselves ranked 7th and 10th respectively as the worst airports in Asia by Business Financing. Mr. Chai Watcharong questioned the legitimacy of this ranking, raising doubts about the UK publisher’s recognition within the aviation industry for evaluating airport quality.

He pointed out that the evaluation criteria used by Business Financing were not comprehensive, focusing solely on the check-in process rather than considering other crucial aspects such as parking, amenities, security, and overall design.

Mr. Chai urged readers to exercise caution before forming conclusions and downplaying the quality of Thai airports based on this ranking. He emphasized the need for a more holistic assessment of airport services.

Citing data from Skytrax, an authority on global airport rankings, Mr. Chai highlighted that Suvarnabhumi Airport was ranked 68th among the best airports worldwide in 2023. Singapore International Airport claimed the top spot, followed by Qatar Hamad Airport. Notably, Noi Bai International Airport in Vietnam did not feature in the top 100 list, further underscoring the need for a comprehensive evaluation approach.

Mr. Chai emphasized Skytrax’s credibility as a reliable source, as it collects feedback from passengers worldwide, covering all aspects of the airport experience from check-in to departure procedures.
