Thai Minister Addresses Airline Rejection of Wheelchair Passengers

The recent incident involving a Thai airline rejecting wheelchair-bound passengers has sparked widespread criticism, prompting the Ministry of Transport to demand clarification and public outreach on passenger guidelines.

Today (March 13, 2023), Mr. Worawut Silpaarcha, Minister of Social Development and Human Security, expressed profound concern after meeting with representatives of disability advocacy networks, highlighting the ongoing challenges faced by people with disabilities in Thai society.

In a recent interview with TIME Magazine, Prime Minister Worawut addressed the need for swift action in addressing the concerns raised by the disability community, emphasizing the importance of inclusive policies and accessibility measures.

Mr. Worawut shared a personal anecdote, underscoring the everyday struggles faced by individuals with disabilities and the urgent need for comprehensive solutions.

Meanwhile, Mr. Surawut Ngeunjong, Secretary-General of the Ministry of Transport, instructed the establishment of a task force comprising high-ranking ministry officials and representatives from related agencies to address the issue.

Furthermore, directives have been issued to airlines to clearly communicate passenger guidelines, particularly regarding individuals with physical disabilities, to avoid ambiguity and ensure a seamless travel experience.

The incident underscores broader challenges in ensuring accessibility and inclusivity for individuals with disabilities, highlighting the imperative for concerted efforts across government agencies and private sector stakeholders to address systemic issues and uphold the rights of all citizens.
