Thai Prime Minister Monitors Repatriation of Elephant Ambassador from Sri Lanka

In an ongoing effort, Caretaker Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha is closely overseeing the planned repatriation of Sak Surin, a distinguished Thai elephant also known as Muthu Raja, from Sri Lanka.

Government Spokesperson Anucha Burapachaisri revealed that Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha has expressed his deep appreciation to all the relevant agencies involved in facilitating the elephant’s return to Thailand for imperative medical treatment.

The 30-year-old male elephant, Sak Surin, is set to embark on his journey back to Thailand on July 1. Ensuring his utmost safety during transit, special preparations are currently underway, including the construction of a brand-new enclosure.

Moreover, Sak Surin will undergo specific training sessions prior to the flight, meticulously designed to acclimate him to the conditions of transportation.

The decision to repatriate Sak Surin arose after a team of Thai veterinarians expressed concerns about the elephant’s health following their visit to Sri Lanka to assess his condition. It is worth noting that Sak Surin is one of the three esteemed ambassador elephants gifted to Sri Lanka by the Thai government.

For an impressive span of 21 years, this magnificent 3.5-ton elephant has resided at the revered Kande Vihara temple, actively participating in ceremonies dedicated to honoring Lord Buddha’s sacred relics.
