Thailand Emerges as a Premier Destination for International Filmmakers

Thailand has solidified its position as a sought-after location for foreign filmmakers, with over 200 international films choosing the country as their backdrop during the first half of this year, generating a revenue of 1.84 billion baht.

Deputy Government Spokeswoman Tipanan Sirichana proudly announced these encouraging statistics on June 29, highlighting the unwavering support of the government in promoting Thailand as an ideal destination for global film productions.

Among the latest foreign productions being filmed in Thailand is a Warner Bros Discovery project that revolves around Thai cuisine. This US production, starring popular Thai couple Prin “Mark” Suparat and Kimberley Anne Woltemas, showcases the country’s picturesque locations. The film is set to be broadcasted on HBO and HBO Go, further enhancing Thailand’s allure as a filming destination.

Tipanan noted that the revenue generated from the 222 foreign films between January and June 16 reflects substantial growth in the industry. Compared to the same period last year, the number of film productions has increased by 12, contributing to a revenue growth of 132.8 million baht.

Since 2016, Thailand has welcomed approximately 740 film productions, generating a total revenue of 4.86 billion baht. Remarkably, even in the face of challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic, 121 film shoots have taken place in the kingdom. The government recognizes the filming industry in Thailand as a lucrative contributor to the country’s soft power and an important source of income.

Acknowledging the immense potential, the cabinet approved a proposal on February 7 to increase cash rebates for film producers using Thailand as a shooting location. The cash rebates were raised from 15% and 20% to 20% and 30% for a two-year period. Additionally, the cash rebate ceiling per film was raised from 75 million baht to 150 million baht. These measures have successfully attracted more filmmakers to choose Thailand as their preferred destination for filming.
