Thailand Maintains Alcohol Ban on Religious Holidays with Exceptions

Thailand’s National Alcoholic Beverage Policy Committee has decided to uphold the ban on alcohol sales during major Buddhist holidays, while granting exceptions for specific locations. The decision, announced by Digital Economy and Society Minister Prasert Chantararuangthong, applies to Magha Puja, Visakha Puja, Asalha Puja, and the start and end of Buddhist Lent.

Despite maintaining the restrictions, the committee has approved exemptions allowing alcohol sales in international airport terminals, entertainment venues in designated tourist areas, and specific locations approved by the Ministry of Public Health upon recommendation from the Interior Ministry. Additionally, alcohol sales will be permitted in hotels, convention halls hosting national or international events, the Bangkok Railway Terminal, and chartered train carriages.

Businesses operating in these venues must implement measures to ensure public order, safety, and restrict access to minors.

The committee’s decision will undergo a 15-day public consultation period before being submitted to the Public Health Ministry for approval. Once finalized, the updated regulations will be forwarded to the prime minister for ratification and publication in the Royal Gazette. The new rules are expected to take effect before Visakha Puja Day on May 11.
