In a recent briefing, Deputy Government Spokesperson Radklao Inthawong Suwankiri unveiled key tourism insights for the year 2023.
Highlighting the data, she revealed that Thailand played host to over 1.61 million Russian tourists, constituting the largest contingent from any European nation and securing the fifth position overall among foreign visitors. This influx resulted in a substantial revenue of 84.66 billion baht.
The enduring 30-day visa exemption pact between Thailand and Russia, initiated in 2005, has been instrumental in fostering tourism ties between the two nations. Notably, in a bid to further bolster tourism and promote cultural exchanges, this visa waiver was extended to a generous 90-day period, spanning from November 2023 to July 2024.
Looking ahead, Radklao outlined proposed initiatives aimed at enticing more Russian tourists, including an envisaged extension by the Ministry of the Interior to allow for stays of up to 60 days. Concurrently, she assured that relevant agencies are diligently revising laws and regulations to synchronize with these forthcoming changes.
Moreover, stringent oversight measures are being implemented by security agencies to assess the impact of these policies on national security and interests. Any adverse findings may trigger a thorough Cabinet review, potentially leading to the rescission of these measures.
Underlining the profound economic implications of the visa exemption, Radklao underscored its pivotal role in bolstering the Thai economy. By attracting a burgeoning influx of Russian tourists, this initiative not only augments the revenue streams within the tourism sector but also catalyzes broader economic growth.
