Thailand’s 5-Day Songkran Boost: Trillion-Baht Impact on Tourism Economy

Bangkok, February 14, 2024 – In a strategic move to boost tourism and stimulate economic activities during the upcoming Songkran festival, Thailand’s Minister of Tourism and Sports, Miss Sudawun Wangsupakitgosol, revealed plans to extend the annual celebration to a remarkable 5-day break from April 12 to 16. The decision, approved by the Thai Cabinet, aims to diversify the festivities across the nation, replicating the success of the 21-day Songkran celebration in April 2017. The extended break is expected to prompt a surge in travel, particularly benefiting secondary cities and regions, echoing the government’s broader policy to distribute tourism income more evenly.

This unprecedented elongation of the Songkran holiday, a traditional Thai New Year celebration, is forecasted to have substantial economic implications. With an estimated expenditure exceeding a trillion baht, officials believe the move will generate a positive impact on the economy, stimulating not only domestic but also international tourism. The Chairman of the Tourism Industry Association of Thailand (TAT), Mr. Charnnath Sriwasad, highlighted that the additional special holiday on April 12 could result in a significant increase in spending, especially from international tourists, further fueling the country’s growing tourism sector.

As part of the initiative, Mr. Charnnath emphasized the importance of encouraging travel beyond the capital. He suggested utilizing travel agencies to facilitate excursions to secondary cities, aligning with the government’s strategy to bolster tourism income in those regions. The policy aims to inspire both domestic and international tourists to explore provinces beyond the usual tourist hubs, creating a more balanced distribution of economic benefits.

Ms. Marisa Sukkosol Nunbhakdi, President of the Thai Hotel Association (THA), shared her insights on the anticipated impact of the extended break. She pointed out that the 5-day Songkran period could lead to a 20% increase in hotel occupancy compared to the same period in 2023, particularly benefiting hotels in areas hosting large-scale Songkran events. Ms. Marisa highlighted the diverse range of activities planned, indicating a potential shift towards mid-tier accommodations. This, she believes, aligns with the heightened demand for varied experiences during the extended holiday.

While the economic projections appear promising, officials remain vigilant in monitoring the implementation’s actual outcomes. The Songkran festival’s expanded celebration not only showcases Thailand’s rich cultural heritage but also serves as a strategic tool to reinvigorate the nation’s tourism industry. As the nation prepares for this unprecedented 5-day Songkran break, all eyes will be on its potential to catalyze economic growth and further position Thailand as a premier tourist destination.
