In a landmark decision, the House of Representatives has greenlit an amendment to the draft equal marriage law, signaling a pivotal moment for Thailand’s legal landscape. The proposed changes entail delineating the permissible age for betrothal or marriage, streamlining procedures for divorce registration, and affording individuals the right to seek redress for breach of engagement. Notably, the amendment includes clauses prohibiting bigamy and unions between closely related individuals by blood, with the overarching goal of fostering equality and safeguarding the fundamental rights associated with marriage and family.
Crucially, the revised legislation endeavors to extend equal protection and rights to all couples, irrespective of their gender composition, be it heterosexual, homosexual, or lesbian partnerships. This encompasses the right to pursue adoption and access state benefits contingent upon marital status, ensuring parity across the board.
