Thailand’s Tourism Rebound: 12.46 Million Foreign Tourists Visit, On Target for 25 Million Goal

Thailand’s tourism industry continues to rebound strongly as it welcomed over 12.46 million foreign tourists between January and mid-June, indicating a promising trajectory towards achieving the country’s whole-year target of 25 million visitors, according to recent data.

The Ministry of Tourism and Sports revealed that as of last week, Thailand had generated a revenue of more than 514 billion baht (14.57 billion U.S. dollars) from international travelers. The return of Chinese tourists played a significant role in contributing to this impressive figure.

Analyzing the data further, it becomes evident that inbound foreign tourists have shown notable growth, particularly from China, which has emerged as a primary market. This surge in arrivals has propelled Thailand to reach the highest number of foreign tourists in three years, with expectations of achieving the target of 25 million visitors by the end of 2023, as stated by Anucha Burapachaisri, deputy secretary-general to the prime minister and government spokesman.

To sustain this positive momentum, the Tourism Authority of Thailand, in collaboration with relevant agencies, is actively devising strategic promotion plans aimed at generating a tourism income of 2.38 trillion baht (67.48 billion U.S. dollars) for this year, according to Anucha.

The current figures have surpassed the total number of foreign tourists recorded in 2022, which stood at 11.15 million. Prior to the pandemic in 2019, Thailand witnessed an influx of nearly 40 million foreign visitors, highlighting the significance of tourism as a key driver of the country’s economic growth, accounting for approximately 12 percent of its gross domestic product (GDP).

The remarkable recovery in Thailand’s tourism sector demonstrates the resilience and attractiveness of the country as a preferred destination for international travelers, while also contributing substantially to its overall economic development.
