Toyota Motor and CP Group Collaborate to Produce Hydrogen from Biogas in Thailand

Toyota Motor has announced its plans to commence hydrogen production in Thailand using biogas, marking a significant milestone in its partnership with local conglomerate Charoen Pokphand Group (CP Group) to advance the decarbonization of the country’s transportation sector. Starting in November of this year, Toyota will install specialized equipment at its Asia-Pacific headquarters in Samut Prakan province, situated in the southern region of Bangkok, to produce hydrogen from biogas derived from chicken manure.

The raw materials necessary for this pioneering project will be sourced from Thai poultry farms operated by CP Group and other collaborators, as well as food waste from the cafeteria of Toyota’s regional headquarters. This groundbreaking initiative represents the first-ever pilot project for Toyota and Thailand in the production of hydrogen using biogas.

The equipment, supplied by renowned Japanese engineering firm Mitsubishi Kakoki, boasts an impressive capability to generate 1,000 liters of hydrogen per hour. Toyota, in collaboration with its trading arm Toyota Tsusho, will also develop an integrated system for compressing, storing, and transporting both the biogas and hydrogen produced during the process.

This endeavor forms a vital part of the ongoing partnership between Toyota and CP Group, which was launched in December 2022. The joint efforts of the two companies aim to explore the conversion of biogas into hydrogen, with the ultimate objective of fueling hydrogen-powered delivery trucks in CP Group’s fleet, thereby contributing to a reduction in carbon emissions.
