Tragic Collision Claims Train Driver’s Life; Northern Line Suspended

In a somber incident that unfolded on the evening of January 19, 2024, tragedy struck as a train on the Chiang Mai Line, Train 109 Bangkok Apiwat-Chiang Mai, collided with a truck, resulting in the unfortunate demise of the train’s driver and leaving another individual injured. The catastrophic event unfolded just before the train was set to reach Chum Saeng Station, located in Phan Lan Subdistrict, Chum Saeng District, Nakhon Sawan Province.

The collision, occurring at 7:34 p.m., resulted in the complete destruction of the train’s front section, while the truck involved overturned, its wheels pointing skyward. Emergency response teams, including volunteer officers from Sawang Chum Saeng, local police, and medical professionals, swiftly descended upon the scene near the Khlong Samphrueng railway barrier in Phan Lan Subdistrict, Chum Saeng District.

The impact of the crash led to an immediate suspension of the Northern Line service on both the up and down routes. The severity of the incident became evident as rescue personnel worked tirelessly to extract the victims and clear the wreckage. Tragically, the life of the train driver was lost in the mishap, as he remained trapped inside the severely damaged train compartment.

At 9:00 p.m., reporters on-site provided updates on the ongoing efforts to address the aftermath. The injured individual, along with the deceased train driver, faced the immediate attention of Sawang Chum Saeng Rescue, deploying cutting-edge equipment to extract the casualties and initiate the recovery process. It is reported that the railway authorities are set to mobilize heavy machinery to remove the wreckage and reopen the Northern Line, a task expected to extend over the coming hours.

This lamentable incident underscores the unpredictable nature of transportation risks, leaving the Northern Line temporarily paralyzed and raising concerns about safety measures on the railway. As investigations into the collision commence, the community mourns the loss of the dedicated train driver and hopes for a swift recovery for the injured party. The tragic event serves as a sobering reminder of the inherent risks associated with rail travel and the importance of continued efforts to enhance safety protocols in the transportation sector.
